Lexie is an Aboriginal woman known in her community as ‘The Dog Whisperer’. Just when and how she was given this title is unknown. She is a gentle soul who cares for any animal that comes her way. Sometimes she finds abandoned animals and others are given to her.
She never says no. Currently she cares for 25 dogs, 3 cats and 5 “chook chooks”! This is a struggle. It is not uncommon to see Lexie at 7am picking up rubbish and cleaning the area in front of the local store to earn some extra funds to support her charges.
She also sells her art to tourists and those willing to help her. She does allow the visiting Vets to de-sex many of the animals, however this service is not reliable, and the dogs and cats do have litters before the next visit.
Living in a remote community is never easy! Food security is a major issue for everyone and of course the animals are the last to be fed.
Around the 1960s Lexie was born in Oodnadatta to an Aboriginal mother and Caucasian father. Her mother passed away when she was quite young and so she was ‘grown-up’ by her mother’s sister.
Her Aunty/Mother moved to Lexie’s Community when she was still young as the Ghan Railway provided work for her family. When the Ghan stopped in the early eighties the Aboriginal people elected to stay in their area.
Life has never been easy for Lexie. Her family would have been supported by missionaries and local pastoralists. She has had limited education but manages quite well.
Lexie is a national treasure and anyone who has had the privilege to sit with her and listen to her many stories, cannot but help to have their lives enriched. She tells stories of travelling on camels and camping around the dry unforgiving areas around the Simpson Desert. She may be ‘getting on in years’, but her mind is strong and her determination to continue to care for her animals is unwavering.
Because of Lexie, her community has benefited in many ways. There are very few stray, uncared for animals. It is well documented that having healthy animals has a direct influence on the physical and mental health of those involved in their care.
Sadly, Lexie passed away peacefully on 27JUL22. It is with her passionate permission that we continue her Web Presence.
